Creating a safe and happy environment for our youngsters to live and play in has always been an important issue and never more so than nowadays. Crime is on the increase and, sadly, our play areas are potential prime targets for criminal damage.
It is with this in mind that the UK Police flagship initiative “Secured by Design” has been set up. They have launched the initiative in a bid to “design out” crime by use of effective crime prevention and security standards for a range of applications. Lower Green Road Infant Play Area in Pembury, Kent has been issued with a “Secured by Design” certificate by Michael Fuller, QPM Chief Constable, Kent Police, recognising their work outlined by this scheme. .

Developed by Wicksteed Leisure in conjunction with Pembury Parish Council this is the first of its kind in the Tunbridge Wells area. One of the most important factors of this project was the re-siting of the playground to a centrally located position, visible on all sides and with gates for easy access. This is where Local Crime Reduction Officer, Eric Baldock, played an influential role as he knows just how important it is for a playground to be safe and secure all round. Pembury Parish Clerk, Barbara Russell, has nothing but praise for Eric’s help and support with the entire project. “Having the backing of the police, and Eric’s expertise in particular has meant a lot to Pembury Parish Council”, enthused Barbara.

Barbara tests out the Pendulum Swing!
Initially faced with quite a lot of opposition from some of the immediate neighbours to the site, Barbara is now keen to point out that the final installation has made a huge difference. The youngsters are “absolutely amazed by it” and the community at large can see the benefits. Not only do the local users now have a safe and secure environment in which to help develop their social and physical skills, but being issued with the “Secured by Design” award thoroughly endorses the sound principles of the Police. |
